As close as you can get to the definitive Portland landmark. This neon sign was originally created to promote “White Satin Sugar,” then White Stag sportswear, then Made In Oregon (a local retailer).

The sign was nearly dismantled after a bunch of disputes about who would maintain it (and pay the electricity bill) so, in 2010, the city swooped in to preserve it as a historic landmark. The sign was updated to read Portland, Oregon, and it’s been protected ever since. (As has the tradition of adding a red nose to the stag during the holiday season. ) Phew!

This series was inspired some of the places and things I love most about my hometown (and where I still live!) of Portland, Oregon.
